DIY Hair Gel
Not your 80’s hair gel
This is not your 80's hair gel, where your bangs could stay up for days. This DIY Hair Gel has a light hold, is moisturizing, and has only 2-3 ingredients. So if anyone is in the process of embracing natural products (you can pronounce the ingredients) into your life or save a few dollars, this DIY Hair Gel might be for you.
Ingredients
Flaxseed
Filtered Water
Essential Oils (optional, add for scent or preservative)
1 Empty Jar or Squeeze Bottle (storing gel)
I have been making this hair gel for a few years, and I love it for wash & go or for my two-strand twist. I make small batches of this product; since it has a short shelf life.
I start with around a 1/4 cup of flaxseed. Then, cover with water (make sure flaxseed is completely covered). Simmer on the stovetop in a small pot.
Keep an eye on the pot, it can boil over quickly. Continuously stir the flaxseed. You will see the gel-like consistency. Once you get that gel-like consistency, turn off the heat and allow it to cool. The gel will thicken up more as it cools.
Simmer Time…Careful it’s hot
Once the gel is cooled, you can now strain gel, using a mesh strainer, muslin, cheesecloth, or a cheap pair of pantyhose. If the gel is too thick to strain, just add little filtered water to thin the gel enough to strain. Store gel in your empty jar or squeeze bottle. Should last a week or two if kept in the fridge.
Strain gel
You can always add essential oil(s) to give it a nice scent or to preserve it a little longer. Tea Tree essential oil work great as a preservative and lavender gives it a nice light scent. I keep my flaxseed gel in the fridge but pull it out 20 min before washing my hair to allow the product to warm up.
If you don't get the results you had hoped for your gel, experiment with adding more or less filtered water and try different hairstyles using this gel.
It might work for your wearable twist, twist outs or wash & go. Give it a try and have fun, it’s just hair!!
